Throughout the years, Illum enjoyed painting, typically in oil or watercolours. His favourite objects were undulate landscapes often with buildings but the sea and boats equally fascinated him.
JEvery summer he spent his vacation on the Danish west coast, loving the harsh nature and its people. What he liked the most was to follow the fishermen on their trips to the North Sea.
